INTRODUCING: ATALANTA WELLER
Atalanta Weller has been steadily conquering the footwear industry with her avant-garde collections. Upon the initial launch of her namesake label, she received critical acclaim, and her unique design sense landed her the NEW GEN award that she won for three seasons in a row. In less than five years time, Weller has been associated with some of the biggest players of the fashion industry. She has been invited as a guest lecturer at the London College of Fashion; she was a guest judge on the panel of the Footwear Friends Award in 2011; she has designed a special edition range for Urban Outfitters; she was commissioned to create a pair of shoes for Barbie’s 50th birthday; and she has seen her shoes becoming part of the Victoria & Albert Museum permanent collection since 2011.
A graduate of the prestigious Cordwainers College, Atalanta has counted many designer collaborations before eventually going solo to establish her own line in 2010; she has worked alongside Clark’s, Hugo Boss and John Richmond and collaborated with fellow British designers Gareth Pugh, Henry Holland, Sinha Stanic and, most recently, Holly Fulton on the latter’s S/S ’15 collection.
A rather intriguing course of events someone initially not interested in the fashion industry would have hardly ever imagined. Weller came to love shoes through her sculpture background; while still a student, she found a pair of 1940s Palter De Liso shoes in a charity shop. Their eye-catching silhouette was all it took to make her realize that a career in the footwear industry was indeed her future.
Creating highly sculptural forms that are functional and wearable at the same time is paramount for Weller, who is set to redefine luxurious, haute couture shoes. She challenges herself to push the boundaries of shoe structures and experiment with the technical aspects of shoe design to develop her own signature aesthetic. Bold graphics, futuristic inspiration, beautiful construction, innovative silhouettes, exceptional quality and maximum comfort coexist beautifully in a full range of footwear – from evening stilettos and statement platforms, to edgy brogues, and everyday boots and flats.
Atlanta Weller is rightfully earning a global reputation as Britain’s “one-to-watch.” The talented designer joins the burgeoning generation of footwear designers nurtured and educated in Britain who is increasingly stepping into the spotlight and establishing successfully their name internationally.
