HERITAGE BRANDS (II): MOREAU PARIS
For the second part on heritage fashion brands, we chose a company that has fairly become the newest addition to the luxury French leather goods companies among the likes of Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Hermès. Moreau Paris offers handmade, exclusive pieces that will always carry their rich history with them.
Founded in 1882 in Paris, France, Moreau began as a manufacturer of luxury leather goods, accessories and travel trunks, until the beginning of the 20th century when the company closed. In 2011, the house Rovnoff revived the brand and released a new, limited-edition collection of luggage and handbags under the brand name Moreau-Paris, which also opened a boutique in Paris in October 2012.
Moreau Paris designer Fedor George Savchenko, who has previously worked for Goyard, has created a line of handbags which are principally characterized by their classy, functional style. The collection is entirely handmade in Moreau’s saddlery and each handbag features the historic Moreau logo embossed on the interior.
For the creation of each handbag, Maison Moreau follows in the tradition of trunk-making both in superb craftsmanship and in the high-quality materials used; the fine and exotic leather which is buffed until it takes an antique appearance and the hand-stitched royal blue lining and finish. Clean lines, minimal hardware and statement colors are used in handbags ranging from messenger bags to the brand’s signature (open and zip) totes. Though Moreau Paris is all about single-color handbags, the check pattern used is an essential part of the company’s heritage; it’s inspired from the suitcase from its debut collection and it’s sometimes labeled with the address of the brand’s first store.
